Casablanca went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Director:

Michael Curtiz) was an American film director, recognized as one of the most prolific directors in history. Curtiz introduced to Hollywood a unique visual style using artistic lighting, extensive and fluid camera movement, high crane shots, and unusual camera angles. He was nominated five times and won twice, once for Best Short Subject for Sons of Liberty and once as Best Director for Casablanca.

Log Line:

A cynical American expatriate struggles to decide whether or not he should help his former lover and her fugitive husband escapes French Morocco.

Conflicts:

Impossible goal:

Rick is a man who stays out of everyone’s matter and keeps his views to himself. As it is confirmed at the very start of the movie when ugarte is arrested by the police officials under the command of Captain Louis Renault for having letter of transit, while rick knows everything but stays quit on the matter.

Later we see Ilsa making and entrance into the movie by asking Sam to play ‘as time goes by’ which makes rick furious, only when he comes forward to insult Sam he notices Ilsa, his first and foremost love. From that point of the movie we notice the love spark between two risings than ever before. As it gives us hope for a romanticize future of Ilsa and rick completely ignoring Laszlo presence in the movie.

But Rick’s character was so much more than this as when the time comes for rick to escape Casablanca with Ilsa he chooses not to do that, instead he let Ilsa go as he is much more concern about ilea’s feeling than his own feelings.

Unlikely hero:

Rick’s nature to keep him out of every matter lands ugarte to death. Rick is not serious about his future and don’t hold any sustainable plans for his future. He only owns an upscale nightclub and a gambling den which is not sustainable enough to run for a life time. While everyone else is making plan to escape the city, rick is resting while he owns the transit paper. He seems not to care that a war is being waged around him or that desperate refugees have flocked to Casablanca. He makes a point of broadcasting his aloofness, stating on several occasions, “I stick my neck out for nobody.”

Invincible villain:

The conditions that land rick and Ilsa in awkward situation are invincible villain. The war. They got separated in Paris due to the war and the return of her husband. Ilsa and rick wouldn’t have fallen in love with each other if it wasn’t for war. And now they are separating again due to the political circumstances.

Richar and Ilsa in Paris

Character Analysis:

Back-story:

When Ilsa arrives in Casablanca, we start to understand some of Rick’s mysterious past. In a flashback to his time in Paris, we see a younger, happier, lighter Rick in love with Ilsa. As though to emphasize how different he is in Paris, he is called Richard, not Rick, in all the flashback scenes. Though Rick and Ilsa plan to leave Paris together after the Nazis’ arrival, Ilsa stands Rick up at the train station, and this painful separation helps explain how the optimistic Richard became the aloof, cynical Rick we see at the beginning of the film. Rick is not hardhearted, but he suffers from heartbreak.

Appearance:

Tall man in his early thirties with sleek side parted hair and shaven face. Rick blain is the crush of every woman.  He is well suited and booted and smells like rich perfumes. Rick can have every woman to himself but his doesn’t desire any.

Want:

Rick’s want is very clear throughout the movie. His love and affection for Ilsa cannot go unnoticed his desire to have Ilsa back in his life is very strong. Although he shows anger towards her for leaving him but despite all of this he couldn’t get her out of his mind. His heart still wants her.

Need:

His need is entirely opposite of his want he can be mean and selfish to keep Ilsa for himself as if she’s an object with no feelings, but as he loves Ilsa he know what Ilsa desires the most. She just cannot disobey her husband. No matter how many time she says that she loves rick but the truth is her loyalty lies with Laszlo

When the time comes for rick and Ilsa to leave the city for good, Rick makes Ilsa board the plane to Lisbon with Laszlo, telling her that she would regret it if she stayed

“Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.”

Positive:

When Ilsa appears at the bar, Rick initially reacts angrily and refuses to give her and Laszlo the letters of transit. By the end of the film, he acts heroically, sacrificing both a possible future with Ilsa and his comfortable life in Casablanca so that Laszlo can escape with Ilsa and continue his important political work.

Negative:

He refuses to accept drinks from customers, treats his lover Yvonne without affection or respect, and seems not to care that a war is being waged around him

Act no 1:

Willingly or not Richard blain now owns the ‘letter of transit’ it is given to him by ugarte so that he could sell them. But befor he could do as he intended he is shot dead by police officials. Richard keeps himself out of the mess and do not confess to anyone that he owns the letter of transit, he could make use of it but decide not to do that for himself.

When Laszlo, his Ex-love husband come forward and ask Richard to hand him transit letter so that lazslo could continue with his political work. Richard clearly refuses to do that, and end the conversation by stating that Laszlo should seek Ilsa for its answer.

Act no 2 (Life of a wanderer and a warrior):

No matter how much Richard could deny his love for Ilsa he was still head over heels in love with that gorgeous lady. When Ilsa tells Richard her reason of their separation, Richard being a understandable man understands Ilsa situation. Ilsa again ask Richard for transit letter but he puts forward a deal. He ask her to stay with him and let Laszlo go. He ask Ilsa to choose him over everything, the same thing he did with Laszlo. Ilsa agrees to do as Richard desires only so that Laszlo could leave the town safely.

Richard states the price of ‘trnsit paper’ to be Ilsa

Log Line:

Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime.

Conflicts:

Impossible goal:

Holly martin is a friend to lime, and upon his reaching to Vienna he gets to know about the death of lime. On his funeral martin interacts with police officers only to learn bad about his friend. He couldn’t trust the bad about his friend and later he meet his friend lime’s girl friend Anna who tells him that lime was bad man. And all the state man are against lime. Later we see in the movie that martin is trying his level best to solve an already solved case and it looks unnecessary to do so.

We notice that martin starts his journey to identify the killer of lime but ended up killing lime.

Unlikely hero:

Holly martin contain a whole lot of personalities within himself, a fun loving person who manages to lighten up the situations, a writer of pulp western novels and a man with great temper. He always manages to come up with the personalities that we least expect at the least time, he sometimes makes fool of himself and also not to forget the most important part, his attachment with Anna. Falling in love with her at such situation is the most absurd thing one man could do. Also not only this we also notice that his feelings for Anna remains the same even after she confess to him about all the misdeeds of Lime and her love for him.

Invincible villain:

Have you ever heard that a victim is a villain? Well in this case lime is a victim for everyone specially for holly but as we proceed with the story we reveal many phases and finally coming to a point that lime, whom we considered to be the victim of a brutal act is himself a villain who have victimize two young children and many more with his illegal supply of pencilin.

Lime made it difficult for martin to resolve the case as he sends thugs after him to eye his every motion. This dreadful act of lime do not just end here but it continues when he meet martin on a Ferris wheel and threaten martin again to not to tell police about this.

Character analysis:

Back-story:

Harry martin is a small Western pulp novelist and writer of juvenile Western pulp stories. He was lining his regular hardworking life when his ‘boyhood’ friend asked him to help him out and offered him a job in Vienna. He left everything behind and packed his bag to leave for better opportunities.

Appearance:

A young man covering his head with a hat shaven face and sleek hair. Always suited and booted, neatness was his armor and he always dress dark. Long coats is his thing that only he can carry so well. Also his appearance was nowhere likely to be of a writer that to a pulp western but it so much gives us the hint of a detective that he soon become the moment he landed his feet on the grounds of Vienna.

Beliefs:

Martin firmly and clearly believes in justice, as we acknowledge in the film that first he tries his level best to bring justice to Lime, as he thought that he was murdered. Martin puts in all of his efforts to know the root cause of his friend murder only to later know that it is his very friend who has murdered more people than he could count. After encountering the truth instead of backing up his friend he goes again him to serve justice to innocent people. Although lime threaten martin to keep his mouth shut but martin being the ‘oh so courageous’ goes again Lime. And knotted a trap for Lime.

Mistakes:

Trust. Yes trust is something that took martin into all of this mess that was too elongated to be cleared easily. Martin firstly trusted Lime for a promising job and fled all the way to Vienna. Martin takes in everyone’s advice and let them play with his brain. Martin’s other and most foolish to be said mistake is to fall in love with Anna, knowing that she is his friend’s girlfriend and she still has feelings for him. Martin any good and love-able deed could do nothing to Anna’s heart as she has already lost it to a con master. In the end we get to know that Anna throughout the story knew everything but she stayed quite but still martin’s love for Anna didn’t even budge a little.

Act No 1:

When harry comes to attend his friend lain funeral, me meets two british army police officers  Sergeant Paine, a fan of Martins’ pulp novels; and his superior, Major Calloway, who says Lime was a criminal and suggests Martins leave town. Harry martin being a problem solver couldn’t accept that his very own friend who just offered his work could be a criminal. So when an official of the British occupying forces approaches Martins, requesting that he give a lecture and offering to pay for his lodging. Viewing this as an opportunity to clear his friend’s name, Martins decides to remain in Vienna.

Act no 2:

Act two for me is when calloway again advises Martins to leave Vienna, but Martins refuses and demands that Lime’s death be investigated.  Calloway reluctantly reveals lime’s heart wrenching activities to martin.  Calloway’s evidence convinces Martins. Disillusioned, he agrees to leave Vienna. Martins visits Anna to say good-bye and finds that she also knows of Lime’s misdeeds.  Upon leaving her flat, he notices someone watching from a dark doorway; a neighbor’s lit window briefly reveals the person to be Lime. His real quest is now change from finding the murderer of lime to getting lime arrested for his misdeeds.

ANKUR

Ankur is a 1974 debut feature film directed by Shyam Benegal.

THE ACTS

ACT ONE:

Act one of Ankur (also known as the seedling) occurs when Surya, the son of village’s landlord, moves to the older house and takes over the administrative responsibilities of the village.

Also, when Lakshmi (Shabana Azmi) and her deaf-mute husband (Kishtayya) are hired as the servants in the house.

ACT TWO:

Surya sends Kishtayya to the landlord’s house to get the fertilizers. He does so in order to flirt with his wife. Later Kishtayya runs away (out of humiliation) from the village as he gets caught while stealing wine. Lakshmi thinks that her husband has left her and sleeps with Surya.

This part of the film can be perceived as an act two which causes Lakshmi to get pregnant and turn into a wanderer.

The protagonist turns into a warrior when she sees the real face of Surya after his wife’s arrival at the place. Also, when her husband returns and Surya mistreats him is the part where Lakshmi turns into a warrior.

CONFLICT ELEMENTS

INVINCIBLE VILLAIN:

Surya is the invincible villain. In fact, it is the powerful who is represented as the villain in Benegal’s movie.

UNLIKELY HERO

Lakshmi is an unlikely hero who seems like a naive and conventional Indian woman at first. But later in the film, she develops into this strong, intelligent woman who not only supports her husband but also protects her child from the cruelties of the landlord’s son.

IMPOSSIBLE GOAL

The protagonist’s goal in this film is to rectify her mistake (of dreaming about living life of a higher class). She embarks on a difficult journey of protecting her child from the villagers and defending her husband from the system’s cruelties.

ELEMENTS OF CHARACTER

POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES:

Lakshmi represents a strong woman who is loyal to her husband but out of desire and impatience, she sleeps with the landlord’s son. She is a wise woman who knows that confronting Surya for her child’s right will cause nothing but disruption in her life.

She does not trust her husband in the beginning and is devoid of his feelings due to his alcohol addiction. Also, Surya is able to make her feel bad about her husband’s disabilities.

Surya traps Lakshmi in his game and makes her feel bad about her husband

BACKSTORY:

Lakshmi wants a child with her husband and after waiting for years, she prays for a child (in the beginning of the film). Later, this wish is granted but the child is not of his husband. Instead, she bears the child of a person who treated her loyal husband horribly.

APPEARANCE:

Lakshmi has an attire of a typical village woman. Although she is poor, she is an attractive, naive woman and that is why Surya traps her in his dirty game.

FEAR AND SECRETS:

Surya is scared of Lakshmi’s husband when he returns and without getting any evidence, he misuses his power to overcome his fear. Also, Lakshmi is guilty as her husband did not know that she had slept with the landlord’s son.

AMAR BHUVAN

Aamar Bhuvan is a 2002 Bengali film directed by Mrinal Sen
The film depicts a place of India where people live peacefully and love each other despite the hatred Aamar Bhuvan is a 2002 Bengali film directed by Mrinal Sen

Director:

Mrinal Sen was an Indian filmmaker. Sen directed films primarily in Bengali and Hindi. He pioneered the New Wave cinema in India. Sen. was an ardent Marxist. His earlier films are characterized by their left-leaning, often Marxist approaches to Indian society. Sen won the National Film Awards 18 times. The films that he made next were essentially political, and earned him the reputation as a Marxist artist. The film fetched Mrinal Sen the Best Director and Nandita Das the best actress award at the Cairo Film Festival.

Log Line:

The film revolved around a triangle Meher, Noor and Sakina. Noor marries Sakina, but soon separates from her. He leaves for the Gulf and returns with a lot of money and a wife after a few years. And found his long lost feeling for Sakina returning

Conflicts:

Impossible Goal:

Noor and Sakina encounter in her house gives us many hopes about this well to do pair. Sakina’s nervousness and shaking hands are enough to portray her feelings for Noor. Just a random moment romanticized by amazing performance. When Sakina offer Noor some water and that slips right away from her hand, making her pallu fall and revealing her beautiful face and silky hair. We see Noor looking at Sakina with eyes full of love and adoration. This moment in the film gives us the hope for more romanticized moments. Noor and Sakina divorced with their mutual understanding but now it feels like they are getting their feelings back, which makes the story all too appealing to watch.

But to our luck this is not how it goes as Noor finds a different way to dhow his love by helping Meher on different stages. Promising himself a better life for Sakina and Meher.

Unlikely Hero:

Sakina is a twisted woman with much more twisted outcomes and feelings. Her reaction towards the help that noor is providing is neither thankful nor silence instead It is rebellious. For instance when Meher told her hat Noor has return her nose ring she was not happy about it but considered it a disgrace.

Although she seems happy with Meher but she still has feelings for Noor as for her attachment with that nose ring. And little moments she encounters with Noor spark with love. She is a faulted woman with unknown feeling residing inside her she tries to vanish the outlook of it.

Invincible Villain:

The conditions of village and mehar and sakina’s house are the only villain of this story. Despite of all the love Sakina and Meher share they are unable to fight their financial circumstances. Noor is only able to show his love for Sakina because he own money, money he could share and money he could lend. Money is not everything but it controls your life, your happiness can go vain if you have no money to cherish it.

Character Analysis:

Back-story:

Noor and Sakina were married long before Noor left for gulf. They were married on the call of Noor’s brother, but both tried to sustain the marriage but their heart won’t chose each other so instead of fighting with their feelings they choose to part their ways.

Appearance:

Sakina from nowhere looked like a mother of three children; average height dark complexion defined her beauty all too well. And Noor on the other hand was middle age man with average height and fair complexion.

Beliefs:

Sakina, Meher and Noor are the part of a Muslim religious community, follow their religion all too well and not only that but they respect other religion too. There is a scene in a movie where a Hindu man enters the frame and all the children and Noor too bent down to touch his feet as a gesture of love and respect.

Secrets And Fears:

Nose ring of Sakina is itself a secret that she has told no one and fears for the revelation of that secret. There is a moment in the movie when Noor comes to Meher house and Sakina encounter him they have their moment and just after Noor leaves Sakina is seen opening a box and getting nose ring out of it. It clearly shoes her attachment with not only that nose ring but with Noor too.

Act No 1:

Noor encounter with Sakina at her house seems like an Act 1 to me. Noor eyes are flowing with thousands of emotions that shout and confess his feelings for Sakina. From this moment the character is setting its want as for Noor it is the love for Sakina but a different way to show case it, his helping hand towards Meher promised Sakina a better life.

Act No 2:

When Meher takes the nose ring to Noor to pawn it without knowing the fact that the actual owner of this nose ring is Noor. Noor gladly agrees to pawn it and give Meher one thousand rupee which is too much for that nose ring. This scene shows the love that Noor hold within himself for Sakina and Meher. And the next thing Noor do is to return the nose ring to Sakina without asking for the return of money.

A SEPARATION

A Separation (2011) is an Iranian film of Asghar Farhadi that won Golden Globe Award for best foreign language film.

FILM: A SEPARATION

DIRECTOR: ASGHAR FARHADI

THE ACTS

ACT ONE:

The very start of the film can be taken as act one when Nadir and Simin sit in a family court before the judge and file for divorce. Both the characters want the best for their daughter but Nadir is stuck in between his ill father and his daughter’s better future. Since Simin wants the safety of her child, she does not want to settle for anything that calls for sacrifice of her daughter’s life.

ACT TWO:

The act two of the film takes place when Nadir finds his father lying unconscious and he accuses Razia (the maid) for negligence. Also, he blames her of stealing money. While the emotionally tired woman begs Nadir, he does not listen to her and instead kicks her out of the house. Next day, Nadir comes to know about Razia’s miscarriage and gets involved in another problem.

ELEMENTS OF CONFLICT

Unlikely hero:
Nadir is an unlikely hero and it can be said that in this unusual film, conflict is the hero himself. Torn between his father and the future of his daughter, Nadir is unable to save his marriage and gets caught in a drama caused by Razia’s miscarriage.

He knows that the conditions of the country are not good for his family’s future and wants to provide a bright future to his daughter but is shown helpless (unlike the usual heroes).

Impossible goal:
Simin wants safety of her daughter and is ready to give blood money for a child’s loss because she believes that Razia’s husband is a short tempered, dangerous man who keeps on threatening them. Nadir does not agree with Simin’s choice. Also, it gets really difficult for Nadir’s marriage to survive as his father is quite ill and Simin wants her family’s safety above all.

On investigation, all the evidences seem to be against Nadir and he appears to be the culprit.

Invincible villain:
The situation is the villain itself in this film as both the families are subjected to scenarios that bring them nothing but turbulence. Razia and his husband are victims of poverty who need money for their living while Nadir and his family faces all the hardships due to Razia’s miscarriage and Nadir’s father (who is not well). In between this trouble is Termeh (daughter) who wishes for nothing but a happy, united family.

ELEMENTS OF CHARACTER

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE QUALITIES:

Nadir is a hardworking man who takes care of his father and daughter. He wants his daughter to get education and also gets a teacher for his daughter’s activities.

Although Razia begs Nadir to let her stay in his house, Nadir blames her for taking the money and without any evidence, kicks her out of his place.

Backstory:
Simin wants to move abroad for the sake of her daughter’s future while Nadir can not do so and has to take care of his father as well. The marriage is falling apart while their daughter is caught in between the two and does not want the separation. The film begins with the point where the couple are filing a petition for divorce.

Want And Need:
Nadir wants to keep his family together and take care of his ill father and to do so, he could not move to another country.
He has to sacrifice the marriage or the family and he chooses to give up on the former.

Secrets And Failures:
In the end, Nadir is unable to save his marriage. Rather, he decides to do what’s best for him and his father. Also, he lies to the prosecutor when asked about his awareness with Razia’s condition (pregnancy) when he kicked her out of his house.

Log Line:

A matinee idol Arindam Mukherjee is going by train to collect an acting award. On the train, he is confronted by a journalist Aditi who somewhat unwillingly starts to take his interview.

Conflicts:

Impossible goal:

Arindam mukherji is a matinee idol, filled with everything a man could desire and hold every charm women would crush to. Arindam mukhergi is seen living a live that every other people are jealous of. Self obsessed, arrogant and ignorant are the words whose explanation is best to define what we thought of Arindam. He seems like a person who doesn’t care much about anything, not about his prize. As he said in the staring that ‘I don’t care about any prize, I just want to get out of this place’

Arindam is a brawny man who has got everything. But as the movie proceeds we acknowledge another face of Arindam as he takes us on the walk of his life. He strips his past, his fears and his guilt’s to a journalist Aditi. The 24-hour train journey with Arindam and Aditi and changes our perspective of stardom life. Arindam seems full on the outside with his clothes, his life style and plenty of drinks. But his insides are as shrunken and hollow as a rotten body.

It was never anticipated to see Arindam’s character walk its own journey from being a stubborn and arrogant star. To a lost and lonely soul.

Unlikely hero:

Arindam have done so wrong in his life that now as he have everything he doesn’t feel good having it and holding it. Arindam has disobeyed Shanker-da and now he fear Shanker-da sayings.

He had an affair with a married woman and instead of feeling guilty he brawled with her husband. He cannot own his mistakes and try to drink them out. He is now fearing the loss of his glorious career as he is not so sure about his recent film.

Invincible villain:

Arindam insecuries and guilt is eating him bit by bit taking all of him from him. Arindam is on a train journey where he meets Aditi a journalist and confronts his fears and guilt’s with her, this interview continues for a 24-hour long journey and we see many phases of Arindam life.

The most mesmerizing and my favorite part is to be of Arindam’s dream where he seems himself getting sucked into the vortex of his own wealth, with even his revered mentor, Shankar-da, not in a position to help him, It is this that makes him come face-to-face with the void inside and want to enter into a semi-confessional mode.

Character analysis:

Back-story:

Arindam was a theater artist who works under the guidance of Shankar-da, his Guru. Arindam in his life before stardom belong to a lower middle class, a class he disregard now. He was a well known but not well earned theater then, who valued his mentor and his friends.

Appearance:

A handsome man of average height and defined face. Well dressed and suited. Polished shoes and cuffed sleeves. Is the appropriate description of his appearance.

Want and need:

  • Want:

Every glory has an End, But no one desired an End to their glory. Same goes with Arindam; he is at the peak of his stardom and popularity and fears the downfall of it. Arindam is on its way to receive an award for his performance but his fear for the flop of his next movie is constraining him to live his moments. He wants to save this glorious period forever and constrain darkness within himself as letting it out will ruin his reputation.

  • Need:

Want and need are the opposite of each other, as want we want is not always what we need. Same in Arindam case he wanted to enclose all the burdens and guilt within him so maintain his image. But when Aditi came up with a perplexing question he couldn’t control himself and let out all of his grieves and wrong doings.

He confessed his relation with promila , a married woman. He confessed how he disobeyed his mentor and chooses to work in fills nonetheless.

Secrets and fears:

Arindam character is a cluster of secrets and fears, each fear tangled with secret. The whole story of Arindam is revealing secrets of his life and his doing in previous life. His dreams are the most important part of this movie as they are the perfect depiction of fear combined with secrets.

Arindam one most prominent fear is to lose is career as he thinks his upcoming movie would be a flop, and three flops movies of a Star will snatch away whole career. At this very moment Arindam remembers his mentor and his say about working in films “ film is a nasty business nothing but business you to hundreds of movie to get to the top and only three flops movie takes you back to the ground”

Mistakes:

Every person is a filled with mistakes, some repent and others don’t. Arindam life being a Star is filled with mistakes he had done. And as we walk on the aisle to count each one of it his mistake we would start with his first mistake that was to disobey his mentor Shanker-da, his choice to pursue Bengali film industry as a full time career known to all of its business.

Act no 1:

Act 1 of the movie ends when Aditi a journalist of woman magazines came forward with a request to interview him but not any regular interview. She desires to know the dark reality of Arindam life, his regrets and guilt’s. To which Arindam answer as a clear no as it would destroy his clear image. But when he moves back to his compartment he dozes off to sleep and dream his fear of drowning in money with no one coming forward to his help. He then decides to take the burden off his heart and makes Aditi his companion to share his burden of guilt and solitude.

Act no 2 (Life of a wanderer and a warrior):

Arindam is now all set to accept his wrong doings in the past and disclose his secrets to Aditi as this makes him less guilty. He changes the perspective of a common person about a star and his life.

SAFAR

Safar is a trio bollywood romance by Asit Sen

Director:

Asit Sen’s stint with Hindi cinema began with Mamta in 1966 and he stayed back to direct 11 more films in Bombay. His total repertoire of 13 films in Hindi and probably 8 in Bengali have some really great movies that have left a lasting impact on cinema goers. Filmmakers who kept the focus sharply on women in their films in the hero-dominated world of Hindi films – there aren’t too many of them. But in his brief repertoire of 13 films in Hindi, Asit Sen’s best known films stand apart for their central women characters – strong yet compassionate

Impossible Goal:

Neela from the start seems like optimistic girl, full of dreams and desire. Her desire to become a surgeon is most highlighted. From the start of the movie Neela looks focused and directed towards  her only goal but as her like life and story moves further we see many chapters opening in front of Neela which arose a question, will Neela be able to lead her life the same way she thought she would be able to?

Starting from her relation with Avinash it seems good and loveable. Until we come to know that Avinash is fighting from cancer. Unlikely Hero:

Neela is not really sure of what she really want, she is in love with Avinash but when he ask her to marry Shanker she agrees to it. she lets every man control her life as if its none of her. Neela relationship with Avinash after marriage is right for her but not to her husband, who don’t even know the whole truth. despite so many problems falling over her she doesn’t try to solve them, instead she simply let them pile over her head and wait them to fall.

Neela’s meetup with Avinash after marriage

Invincible Villain:

Avinash and Shekhar left no stone unturned to make Neela’s life a little more difficult for her. They are supposedly the hero of this story but to Neela’s story they are the only villain. Known to the feeling of Neela Avinash still continued their relation. And he on his decides what is good for Neela’s forcing her to marry Shekhar when he was very well aware of Neela’s feeling. Love from Shekhar wasn’t enough for Neela. Shekhar is manipulating Neela and asking montu to spy on Neela was the last pillar of their rusted foundation

Shanker to ask Avinash for his help to get Shanker and Neela married

Character analysis:

Back-story:

The whole story is flashback of Neela’s life. Her hurdles and her journey. And it clearly described her character. Neela is a chase; she settled her goal a long time ago and is now working towards them. Her mind is set on her goal but her heart… it wander to find its owner. Love and relations are something that brought so many changes in Neela’s life.

Appearance:

Elegant, graceful and beautiful are the words that perfectly describe Neela’s appearance. Neela’s eyes are one prominent feature of her face that outstand her beauty, there is a song dedicated in this movie on her eyes only. Neela didn’t belong to a well economic family so whatever she wear isn’t expensive, but she surely knows how to handle herself beautifully. The attraction in her smile and the innocence in her eyes draw every man towards it.

Want And Need:

Act no 1:

As Avinash falls sick and Neela circulates her life around him, it is visible that Neela would cross every hurdle to be with Avinash. There love story was now moving towards the dead story. As Neela is unknown to Avinash cancer she serves day and night for him. On parallel we see doctor looking into Avinash reports and he also doesn’t seem happy. This sickness of Avinash has brought Neela and him together. That is not going to be good for Neela future.

Act no 2

We see Shekhar asking Avinash to get Neela ready for marriage. This is a very crucial stage in this movie where we don’t know what will happen next. REASON, DEBATE AND A STORY

Also known as Jukti Takko Aar Gappo, Reason, debate and a story is the last film of Bengali director, Ritwik Ghatak that won National award for best story in 1974.

FILM: REASON, DEBATE AND A STORY

DIRECTOR: RITWIK GHATAK

THE ACTS

ACT ONE:

The incident that really can be considered as act one in the film is when Nilkantha Bagchi (played by Ghatak himself) is left alone by his wife Durga and his son (Satya) due to his alcoholic nature and friends. He soon finds himself without shelter and sets out on a journey to find a place for himself and a woman (Bangabala) who enters his room while looking for a place.

ACT TWO:

When Nilkantha embarks on the journey to reconcile with his wife and observes the conditions arounf him, he turns into a wanderer. The scene in which he talks about how he was also young and fresh like the youth of Bangladesh until he fell in love, may also be perceived as act two by the audience.

CHARACTER ELEMENTS:

Set in a time of after-partition, Nilkintha portrays role of a man who had tried thirty years for the reunion but ended up in a sea of alcohol, according to his old friend Basu.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES:

Ghatak plays the role of an alcoholic man whose family leaves him due to his drinking habits. However, he is a helpful person who is left without a shelter but agrees to help a woman who came to him in search of shelter.

Nilkintha is a hopeful yet disappointed character who wants to experience the youth of Bangladesh and get rid of the scars left on the younger generation by the separation of West Bengal.

APPEARANCE:

With a casual kurta and thick glasses, the protagonist in this film reflects the role of a man who seems intellectual yet care-free but in reality, he is concerned about the situation of the people around him.

Leading life of a drunkard, Nilkintha actually is a character portrayed metaphorically. It is the name of Hindu god Shiva, who drank poison that emerged from the oceans to prevent it from destroying everything in the world.

FEAR AND SECRETS:

Nilkintha is afraid that he might not be able to find a place for the people around him who had now hopes due to him, and it might be possible that Bangladesh would not be able to bloom like he did, in his youth.

BACKSTORY:

It is obvious that the film represents the time when Nilkintha’s state is disturbed by political incidents.

The film actually is Ghatak’s way to find some hope while the political and cultural turbulence overtook his nation.

It narrates the story of thousands of people affected by the 1971 separation and those who found refuge in Calcutta. Ghatak had explained that the story does not represent any political ideology. Rather, it is a portrayal of a common man’s eye.

ELEMENTS OF CONFLICT

INVINCIBLE VILLAIN:

It would be right to regard the political conditions as the invincible villain as Nilkintha was seen concerned about the after-partition conditions throughout the film.

UNLIKELY HERO:

Nilkintha is one of the most bizarre heroes I have come across in the world of cinema. With no respect left in the society due to his gathering and alcohol addiction, Nilkintha still represents the role of a wise, concerned man who hopes to see the circumstances get better again.

IMPOSSIBLE GOAL:

The protagonist hopes to reconcile with his wife and his son, Satya. On his journey to find shelter, he meets different people who are the victims of the political fiasco.

QANOON

Qanoon is a 1960s court room drama, mystery and thriller by B.R Chopra

Director:

Baldev raj chopra was Indian Film Producer, Film Director, Screenwriter, Television Director, Television Producer who was well-known for his appearance in Bollywood movies and Television series. His most known work includes Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Kanoon (1961), Gumrah (1963), Humraaz (1967), Awam (1987). Inspired by this success, he established his own production house, B.R. Films, in the year 1955, and started off with a bang with the release of Ek-Hi-Rasta. In the Year 1999, he was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his contribution to Indian Cinema.

Log Line:

A lawyer holds the eyewitness evidence to catch a killer, but the identified criminal is the lawyer’s own mentor, prospective father-in-law, and also the judge who presides over the case.

Conflicts:

Impossible Goal:

Being a lawyer and an eye witness of a murder that you consider is done by your mentor and father in law is not easy. I repeat not easy. It is a burden that Kasilash decided to hold onto himself just so that he could save kaalia ( a suspected murderer of dhaniram). As a lawyer he took the oath to serve every person justly, but life put him over bridge of sword. Walking on it made him bleed but falling might cost him the river of fire underneath. Kailash was determine to save kaalia from this in just justice but also he wanted to save his mentor, who he considered to be the murderer. The main question around which the whole story revolves is, Will kailash be able to bring kaalia and dhaniram justice? As he knew the murderer but couldn’t utter a word.

Badri Prasad is brought to the dock to answer his accusation.

Unlikely Hero:

Kailash is the protector and the savior of the law. He is not only a successful lawyer but also a loyal son-in-law. His relationship with his mentor is holding him to pursue his duty faithfully, as he cannot confess that he saw Badri Prasad committing the crime. It is clear in the start that he might try to save Kaalia but surely he will not be able to avenge Dhaniram’s death. But as the film moves further into the twist and turns we witness that Kailash confesses badri Prasad’s crime, which is something that we did not expect from him.

These changes in Kailash character not only portray him as an unlikely hero but made us able to draw a connection and attachment with the character.

It is beautifully said

Put your heart aside. Duty comes first. But when fulfilling your duty, put your heart into it. It helps.

Josemaria Escriva
Kailash is the only eye witness of Dhaniram’s murder

Invincible Villain:

Laws are certainly made to protect people from villains, but what if we turn the table?

Law is now the villain. In this film law is portrayed as the villain as is the true killer of justice and in this film also the killer of kaalidas. It is made quite evident that a person with higher rank or privilege will easily slip through the hands of law, and as the law is blind folded wouldn’t be able to hunt it down. Also how a decision is entirely made on what the witness sees. He might have concluded things differently but the life of the victim depends on that victim.

The most powerful scene in the movie is when kalidas ask law to give him back his 10 years when he was falsely accused of a crime

Character Analysis:

Appearance:

Kailash’s appearance was enough to tell us about his reputation and standard. He is seen well dressed and has well etiquette. His appearance not only includes his clean iron clothes and polish shoes but also his etiquette.

Beliefs:

His believes and morals are the only thing that made QANOON a must watch for everyone. His believe to bring justice and fulfill his oath made his character an inspiration for living bodies. In the courtroom when he confesses to be the eyewitness of dhaniram’s murder he put aside all of his love and relationship duties and let his heart follow what he believes.  Not only that but when Kailash was trying to save Badri Prasad he was also following his belief on loyalty that he hold towards his mentor.

Want And Need:

Kailash’s WANT from the very start is to obey the law and make people do the same. As a lawyer he is supposed to bring justice not only to Dhaniram but kaalia too. But he forgets that he also NEEDS to avenge Dhaniram’s murderer. Kailash on his own was not very sure about himself he was dangling between love and duty. His love for his mentor wanted him to protect Badri Prasad but his duty needed him as a loyal lawyer.

Secrets And Fears:

Kailash character was not as white as his collar. He held secrets and fears beneath his sleeves.

He keep it to himself that he saw Badri Prasad murder Dhaniram. Also, he didn’t even tell this ugly truth to Meena (daughter of Badri Prasad) as he thought that she might not be able to forgive her father. Kailash was also afraid of the punishment that the court might give to Badri Prasad if he confessed his witnessing experience in front of everyone.

Mistakes:

Every person holds some mistakes that later on helps in making them a better person. Same goes with Kasilash as a realizes his mistakes of saving badri Prasad when kaalia is sentenced to death. After Kasilash realizes his mistakes he tries his level best to undo them. That now has to be confessing bard Prasad crime.

It is noted that Kasilash is not just an ordinary person of a society but a lawyer who holds many responsibility regarding the good and bad of this society. Notifying that the mistake of hiding the truth not only from the law but from meena is considered to be a crime.

The person kailash saw on murder night,

Positive And Negative Attributes

  • Positive:

Kailash tries his level best to bring justice to kaalia but when he notices that he is failing to do so he reveal the truth that he witnessed on the murder night.

  • Negative :

Being a lawyer it was Kailash duty to notify the court about the horrifying activity on the murder night. But he considered his love and loyalty more important and almost let an innocent serve death sentence. Not only that, he also almost let the murderer slip out of his hands.

Act No 1:

Act one of this movie started when kailash realized that kaali is being accused of a murder that he hasn’t done. This injustice to kaalia persuaded kailash to fight for kaalia as he was unable to do the same for dhaniram. The moment kailash decided to lead the case in favor of kaalia his struggle started.

Act No 2 (Life of a wanderer and a warrior):

Act no two of this movie started when Kailash finally confessed the entire horrible thing that he witness on the murder light. Previously he was fighting for half justice i.e. justice for kaalia and he let the murder of dhaniman fade away. But when he realized that he couldn’t save kaalia from this blind law he put forwarded the truth he held within himself for far too long.

VERTIGO

Hitchcock’s most analyzed work, Vertigo (1958) is considered as a masterpiece in the world of psychological thrillers.

FILM: VERTIGO

DIRECTOR: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Director’s introduction:
Alfred Hitchcock also known as the master of suspense has created master pieces like The thirty nine steps and North by Northwest. Alfred loved to play with story lines in which an innocent man leading a usual life gets stuck in an unusual scenario that turns into a fascinating mystery with time. Hitchcock is known for his art of creating thrillers and playing with the minds of audiences. He liked to keep it simple and never believed in vague storytelling.

The film’s log line:
A detective suffering from acrophobia tries to save his friend’s wife and falls in love with the woman who leads him to higher places but all is not as it seems.

Character of Scottie:
The detective, after going through an accident, gets attacked by a fear of heights. This phobia causes him to think of retirement but never did John think that he would overcome his fear by falling in love with a woman who does not even exist.

Out of sympathy for his old friend, Scottie agrees to help his wife who seems to possess an unsound mind. Rather than being logical, he acts emotionally while taking the decision.

Synopsis:
Former detective, Scottie has to follow his friend’s wife, Madeleine. While trying to save her, he falls in love with the woman. Madeleine dies by jumping off the roof and Scottie is left devastated. The detective later finds a woman who is eerily similar to his love. He tries to change Judy into Madeleine but does not know she is the same person and that his friend had planned a murder. The poor guy had fallen in love with a woman who was just an impersonation.

THE ACTS

ACT ONE:

The inciting incident of the film takes place when the protagonist Scottie meets his old friend who asks him to follow his wife. He agrees after his friend convinces him that Madeleine is in some sort of danger and might kill herself.

ACT TWO:

Act two of the film occurs when Scottie follows Madeleine and ends up spending the day with her. He takes her to the childhood home of Carlotta. There he expresses his love and Madeleine suddenly runs into the church and up the bell tower. Scottie is stopped by his acrophobia and is unable to follow his love. He stands helpless while the woman jumps and kills herself.

He turns into a warrior once he starts suspecting the truth of the whole disturbing accident.

CHARACTER ELEMENTS OF THE PROTAGONIST

Scottie is faced by a fear of heights (acrophobia) after an incident. Vertigo is a condition of dizziness he experiences whenever his phobia confronts him.

BACK STORY:

Scottie was engaged to his college friend Midge Wood. It seems like the engagement was broken by Midge as Scottie still is seen trying to ask her out. The feelings are still there between the two as later in the film, Midge is shown getting jealous of the mysterious woman, Madeleine.

Scottie is a detective who goes through an accident (early in the film) that leads him to develop a serious fear of heights. The whole story later is built on his condition of dizziness.

APPEARANCE:

Scottie has an attire of a respectable detective of the twentieth century. With a long, formal coat and a hat, his appearance exhibits the character of a handsome, intelligent man.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES OF SCOTTIE:

Scottie is an intelligent, wise detective who solves the conspiracy set against him and cures his vertigo by forcing Judy to reenact the scene that so traumatized him: the pitching of the dead body of the real Madeleine Ulster from the bell tower by her husband, with Judy as his able and willing accomplice.

He is a kind person who falls in the trap of his friend out of kindness and his helping attitude to save a life.

Not only is he kind but also an emotional man who soon falls in love with his friend’s wife. This aspect of his personality is what causes him the disadvantage and he ends up getting caught in the trap set by his evil friend.

FEAR AND SECRETS:

Scottie is afraid of heights due to an accident in the past. So at heights, he is faced by vertigo and his dizziness lead him to think of horrible scenario. To overcome this acrophobia, he forces Judy to reenact the accident that traumatized him (falling of Madeleine).

Another secret is that he had fallen in love with the wife of his friend whose protection was a duty he had been given by his old acquaintance.

ELEMENTS OF CONFLICT

INVINCIBLE VILLAIN:

The antagonist in this thriller, I believe, is Madeleine who is also the lover of him. She was the person who actually trapped him into her husband’s evil plan. Taking use of his acrophobia, she traumatized him by jumping off the bell tower.

IMPOSSIBLE GOAL:

Scottie had to come out of his fear of heights caused by an incident. As a result he takes retirement and starts working to get rid of the phobia. The whole plot ahead tangles him in a series of incidents that eventually lead to his overcoming of fear.

For example, Judy’s reenactment of the happening that caused him trauma actually helped him to overcome his vertigo.

UNLIKELY HERO:

At first, it was impossible to believe that Scottie would not continue his retirement and rather, he would become a part of a mystery. Getting caught in the drama, Scottie falls in love with a woman whose mysterious nature leads him to places of heights. Eventually, the man loses his fear through one of the most uncertain methods.
