Director:

Asit Sen’s stint with Hindi cinema began with Mamta in 1966 and he stayed back to direct 11 more films in Bombay. His total repertoire of 13 films in Hindi and probably 8 in Bengali have some really great movies that have left a lasting impact on cinema goers. Filmmakers who kept the focus sharply on women in their films in the hero-dominated world of Hindi films – there aren’t too many of them. But in his brief repertoire of 13 films in Hindi, Asit Sen’s best known films stand apart for their central women characters – strong yet compassionate

Log Line:

Neela and Avinash love each other but Avinash thinks that he will not be able to give her a comfortable life. So he gets Neela married to Shekhar, only that Shekhar also goes bankrupt.

Conflicts:

Impossible Goal:

Neela from the start seems like optimistic girl, full of dreams and desire. Her desire to become a surgeon is most highlighted. From the start of the movie Neela looks focused and directed towards  her only goal but as her like life and story moves further we see many chapters opening in front of Neela which arose a question, will Neela be able to lead her life the same way she thought she would be able to?

Starting from her relation with Avinash it seems good and loveable. Until we come to know that Avinash is fighting from cancer. To us as an audience it feels like that she might left everything behind and devote herself to Avinash. That she was more than willing to do. Second was her marriage with Shekhar and their collapsing relation at times it looked like that again her choices would shatter her dreams. The moment Neela got to know about Shekhar trashing business she left her studies only to give all of her time to Shekhar and their house.

But in the end even after everyone holding the starring wheel of Neela’s life car and making decisions for her life. She finally succeeded in achieving what she desired the most.

Unlikely Hero:

Neela is not really sure of what she really want, she is in love with Avinash but when he ask her to marry Shanker she agrees to it. she lets every man control her life as if its none of her. Neela relationship with Avinash after marriage is right for her but not to her husband, who don’t even know the whole truth. despite so many problems falling over her she doesn’t try to solve them, instead she simply let them pile over her head and wait them to fall.

Invincible Villain:

Avinash and Shekhar left no stone unturned to make Neela’s life a little more difficult for her. They are supposedly the hero of this story but to Neela’s story they are the only villain. Known to the feeling of Neela Avinash still continued their relation. And he on his decides what is good for Neela’s forcing her to marry Shekhar when he was very well aware of Neela’s feeling. Moving on to Shekhar he promised his love for Neela to everyone but what is the purpose of love if it put barriers around you? What is the purpose of love if it doesn’t ensure trust? Love from Shekhar wasn’t enough for Neela. Shekhar is manipulating Neela and asking montu to spy on Neela was the last pillar of their rusted foundation

Character analysis:

Back-story:

The whole story is flashback of Neela’s life. Her hurdles and her journey. And it clearly described her character. Neela is a chase; she settled her goal a long time ago and is now working towards them. Her mind is set on her goal but her heart… it wander to find its owner. Love and relations are something that brought so many changes in Neela’s life.

Appearance:

Elegant, graceful and beautiful are the words that perfectly describe Neela’s appearance. Neela’s eyes are one prominent feature of her face that outstand her beauty, there is a song dedicated in this movie on her eyes only. Neela didn’t belong to a well economic family so whatever she wear isn’t expensive, but she surely knows how to handle herself beautifully. The attraction in her smile and the innocence in her eyes draw every man towards it.

Want And Need:

Neela’s growing love for Avinash made him the center of Neela’s life. Her want become a content life with Avinash. But things didn’t go as they are suppose to go, Neela get to know about his growing disease her want revolves around the wellness Avinash.

But in reality the true need of Neela’s character was to groom as a person, achieve something that she desired the most – a doctor. A person faithful duty lies not to anyone else but to himself. He must be honest and kind to himself. And that is what Neela needed the most. After two persons controlling her life making decisions for her she deserved all the beauty of this world.  

Secrets And Fears:

Neela keep it away from Shekhar that she has feelings for Avinash. She keep it all away, while going out to meet Avinash she didn’t even once told Shekhar. Her love for Avinash is one secret that if comes out could shake the foundation of her marriage. And results in the death of Shanker.

Act no 1:

As Avinash falls sick and Neela circulates her life around him, it is visible that Neela would cross every hurdle to be with Avinash. There love story was now moving towards the dead story. As Neela is unknown to Avinash cancer she serves day and night for him. On parallel we see doctor looking into Avinash reports and he also doesn’t seem happy. This sickness of Avinash has brought Neela and him together. That is not going to be good for Neela future.

Act no 2

We see Shekhar asking Avinash to get Neela ready for marriage. This is a very crucial stage in this movie where we don’t know what will happen next. Neela is dipped from head to toe in Avinash love and wouldn’t consider marring any other man. As she has already devoted herself to Avinash. But as Avinash asked Neela to marry Shekhar as he can give her much more satisfactory and good life. Neela refuses to do so but Avinash forces her in a way that she is not able to refuse. This is how we see Avinash stayed a hero while forcing Neela to marry someone she doesn’t want to. This part of the story completely changes the story what we though in the start of the story is now reverse.
